This was not going to end well for someone. The officers from the Police Department were staring at us like we were all criminals. Layna was about a tenth of a second from a full on panic attack, and my parents and uncle were staring at us like we had two heads. Omitting shit is as good as lying to them. I omitted to tell them that Layna was a client, though truth be told, she has been more than that from the day we got here. Or before, even.
“Let go…” Layna said, her nails digging into my wrists as she tried to pry my arms off of her. I spun her around to face Franklin. I couldn’t do it myself because I knew the second I let her go she was going to run. I had to trust him to get through to her.
“Listen, darlin’, you can’t run. You’re safe here. We-” he said jestering between him and myself, “we won’t let him or anyone else get to you. You have to trust us. If you leave, we all leave. We can go someplace else. I know places, so does Thomas.” He pleaded for her to understand how serious this was.
“I-I-” she dissolved into sobs, her body jerking in my grip. Franklin moved to wrap her in a hug. Once he had her, I let her go. I turned to the cops. My glare must have caught them off guard, because they both straightened.
“Do you understand how dangerous this is? For her, I mean? You cannot put her real name on this report. I’d prefer it to not go on there at all. If I have to go above your heads, I will.”
“Don’t threaten me, son.” I glanced at his name tag.
“Officer Tucker, you misunderstand me. That was no threat. I will go above you, or steamroll over you to protect her. She is the only witness in this case. If that bastard gets to her because you fucked up, there will be no place you can hide.” They both moved, hands going to their guns. When the office door opened I didn’t have to look to know it was Thomas.
“She’s more than a witness. To you, I mean,” Tucker questioned. I nodded. How could I convey to them that I was madly, deeply in love with this woman and I truly would go to any lengths to keep her safe.
“Okay,” Tucker said.
“What?” the other officer said. He scowled at the older man.
“Roger, shut up. That girl’s life is worth more than a name on a paper. Plus, that idiot downstairs was higher than a kite on a windy day.” He turned to Angel. She was quietly sitting on the couch, her stare locked on Layna.
“Miss Craven, do you want to press charges on the man whom you say attacked you?”
“Yes.”
“He did attack her. There is no ‘say’ about it,” Layna snarled, turning in Franklin’s arms. Her glare made me smile. My girl still had some fight in her. Good.
